My Background
I have many years of experience providing educational and personal counselling for students and clients. I also have years of professional experience in psychiatric settings and have been an instructor, teaching and supervising student nurses in psychiatry and other hospital areas. I have worked with clients dealing with abuse and trauma and received training from Victoria Sexual Assault Centre (VSAC) and Vancouver Island Counselling Center for Immigrants and Refugees (VICCIR).
My Approach
My counselling role takes place within a confidential and collaborative relationship. I use a variety of therapeutic approaches specifically geared to your needs and I work in consultation with you to establish goals and strategies that we both agree will be helpful and beneficial. I believe that everyone has their own unique strengths, abilities and self-knowledge and, with support and guidance, they can develop the skills needed to address their current concerns.
My approach takes into account that, as human beings, sometimes most of us need a little assistance to work through some of the challenges that life throws our way. Sometimes we develop unhealthy and negative thought patterns and resulting behaviours that can leave us with feelings of depression, anxiety, and low self-esteem. These feelings can further manifest as relationship problems, unhealthy coping mechanisms or a general sense of dissatisfaction and lack of meaning.
You may find yourself feeling overwhelmed by situational life changes that you feel are out of your control such as parenting issues, caregiver fatigue, and work-related problems including bullying. You may be in an abusive relationship or dealing with past trauma. My approach is client-centred and may include things like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), visualization and solution-focused therapy. I also use mindfulness, and self-compassion theories to assist my clients to lean into the changes that they wish to make in their life.
My goal is to partner with you to increase resilience and the overall belief in your ability to face each challenge in your life as it arises.
I welcome clients from a diversity of cultures, religions, ethnic, gender and sexual backgrounds.
